Restoring Meadow, Marsh and Reef (ReMeMaRe) (pronounced “re-memory”), is an ambitious habitat restoration initiative, so called, as it aims to address baseline shift and reverse centuries of decline of three of our priority estuarine and coastal habitats, seagrass meadows, saltmarshes and European native oyster (Ostrea edulis) reefs.

Vision and Mission

The ReMeMaRe Vision is for restored estuarine and coastal habitats that benefit people and nature.

The ReMeMaRe Mission is to restore at least 15% of our priority habitats along the English coast by 2043.

  • What this means in practice: We need to restore at least 55 km² of saltmarsh and 6 km² of seagrass meadows to achieve our mission. We have so few Native Oyster reefs left that we cannot give an area so instead, we are promoting restoration action in as many locations as feasible.

Strategic Goals

ReMeMaRe has developed seven Strategic Goals to deliver estuarine and coastal restoration to achieve our mission and fulfil our vision of supporting a more sustainable future for us all. They are:

1. Enhanced health and connectivity of estuaries and coasts from restored priority habitats and species

2. Improved protection for restored habitats

3. Improved socio-economic regeneration of communities

4. Greater capacity to deliver restoration action by a diverse workforce

5. Enhanced awareness of the ecosystem services and social & economic benefits to local communities from habitat restoration

6. Coordinated research & development

7. An investment pathway

ReMeMaRe aims to support more and larger projects that deliver habitat and ecosystem restoration over the land- and sea- scape scales
