Seascapes webinar

This webinar introduced the concept of "Seascape" marine restoration, and an overview of marine restoration projects and progress in the U.K. The webinar covered:

  • The definition(s) of "seascape" restoration, and how it differs from the current approach
  • The barriers and opportunities for marine restoration at scale
  • Is seascape restoration already happening in the U.K.?
  • How do we know our marine restoration efforts are being effective?
  • How do we deliver marine restoration at scale (passive v.s. active restoration)

The panel comprised an exceptionally strong line-up of experienced marine restoration experts:

  • Joanne Preston, University of Portsmouth
  • Sarah Young, WWF
  • Roger Proudfoot, Environment Agency
  • Chair, David Tudor

Spectacular Saltmarshes with Joshua Styles: NPMS Webinar recording

Botanical specialist Joshua Styles introduces one of Britain's most internationally imperiled coastal habitats. In this talk, Joshua looks at how these magical habitats form, the myriad of fantastical ecosystem services they provide us with and also some of the plants that grow on them, from the specialist grasses to the weird, wacky and outright bizarre. Coast to Coast: Nature-Based Solutions for Climate, Biodiversity & People

On 7th November 2022, in the COP26 Green Zone, the Environment Agency's (EA) Estuaries and Coasts Planning (ECP) manager, Roger Proudfoot, was joined by colleagues from the RSPB to provide a joint session on “Coast to coast: nature-based solutions for climate, biodiversity and people”.

This session showcased a short film on coastal wetland habitat restoration examples from around the world, including the UK Medmerry scheme, which was the first UK project to achieve official accreditation as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The event provided Roger with an opportunity to highlight the ongoing and future work of ReMeMaRe and the initiatives role in supporting nationally strategic estuarine and coastal habitat and ecosystem restoration.

Tidal Wetlands: COP26 short film

This video is for the short film on coastal wetland habitat restoration only, titled "Tidal Wetlands". This was delivered through a partnership of the Environment Agency (EA) and the RSPB and was played in the Green Zone at COP26 on 7th November, as part of the session on “Coast to coast: nature-based solutions for climate, biodiversity and people”.

See the link above for the recording of the full session.

Restoring Meadow, Marsh and Reef (ReMeMaRe): COP26 short film

On 2nd November 2022 at COP26, the Virtual Ocean Pavilion (VOP) provided free online access to a wealth of information, from talks, to videos, to posters to virtual interaction with participants from around the world.

In preparation for the VOP, the Environment Agency's Estuary and Coast Planning (ECP) team produced a short 3 minute video, providing an overview of the “Restoring Meadows, Marshes and Reefs (ReMeMaRe)” habitat restoration initiative. This video was used during the launch of the VOP and was subsequently hosted on the Defra booth throughout the summit.
