Background
In England, over recent centuries, we have lost:
- Seagrass meadows from up to 50% of the water bodies where it was once found
- 85% of saltmarsh
- 95% of native oyster reefs
With the loss of these habitats comes the loss of the valuable benefits and services they would provide our society.
By restoring these precious estuarine and coastal ecosystems, we are enhancing society's connection to the natural world, whilst delivering Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that address issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, sustainable food, health and well-being, as well as the socio-economic benefits of recreation and tourism that can help to alleviate deprivation in coastal towns.
To support collaborative delivery, ReMeMaRe partners have co-developed a ReMeMaRe Roadmap to 2030. This sets out the proposed structure of a series of themes and suggested key deliverables of relevance to that theme. These deliverables, or projects, are those which the partnership feel would best enable the delivery of estuarine and coastal restoration across England and will be taken forward by those partners who have the remit, experience and resources to contribute to each piece of work.
We intend to maintain the Delivery Plan as a 'live document', updating it as projects complete and importantly, as partners and other stakeholders see a need or opportunity to address evidence gaps, provide supporting tools and guidance and support restoration of estuaries and coasts.
If you would like to be involved in ReMeMaRe's work, if any of the potential projects described overlaps with your existing works or future ambitions, or if you think of any other deliverables or projects that could support estuarine and coastal restoration, please feel free to get in touch.
